In the need to take a closer look at societies around the world that are too often overlooked by the mainstream media, we are reading the literature of countries around the world to gain a better understanding of their history, societies, ways of thinking, and political changes and their interactions with society and the struggles of people hoping to gain more rights and freedom.
In his book "The Patience Stone", Atiq Rahimi distills the tragedy of Afghanistan into a tiny room where a woman is caring for her husband who is in a coma after being shot in the war. This man will become her patience stone as she engages in bold frankness. She will tell him her most dangerous secrets and buried desires, defying her fear and submission.
